Data Explorer

Effortlessly explore data with graphs and comparative analysis to identify trends, patterns, and specific data points visually!

Written by Edoardo Nalon

Data Explorer is a new feature that allows users to explore and visualize historical data ingested into the platform. It provides functionalities for browsing, comparing, and analyzing various telemetry values over time.

Value of Service

  • Improved data exploration and visualization: Users can view data in either graph or table format, enabling them to identify trends, patterns, and potential anomalies visually.

  • Comparative analysis: Users can compare data points between different sites or multiple values from one site within a single view.

  • Streamlined data navigation: The hierarchical data tree structure facilitates efficient navigation and selection of specific data points based on various criteria.

Supported Values/Controllers

Data Explorer displays all normalized telemetry values ingested and mapped by the driver into the database.

Functionality

  • Data Tree:

  • Presents a hierarchical structure of available data points based on the defined data model.

  • Displays both customer-friendly and normalized names for telemetry values.

  • Enables selection of individual data points or entire branches, automatically reflecting selections in visualizations.

  • Provides filtering capabilities based on region, asset type, diagnostic type, and unit.

  • Offers search functionality across all levels of the data tree or specific data point types.

  • Time Range and Granularity Selector:

  • Allows users to define the desired timeframe for data visualization (up to 3 years).

  • Offers various granularity options (e.g., hourly, daily, weekly) based on the selected time range.

  • Automatically assigns a default time range and granularity if not explicitly chosen.

  • Displays visualizations only for available data within the selected time range.

  • Graph View:

  • Presents selected data points in a graphical format.

  • Creates separate graphs for values with different units.

  • Displays a legend upon hovering over data points, providing details like site, data point name, timestamp, and value.

  • Supports the selection of up to 50 telemetry values for visualization.

  • Handles missing data points by maintaining a line between the last and next recorded values.

Known Limitations

  • Data Availability: Data Explorer can only display normalized and ingested data points. Non-normalized or non-ingested values are not accessible.

  • Data Type: Currently, only telemetry values are supported. Parameters are not included.

  • Graph Limitations:

  • Legends are not linked between graphs, requiring manual identification of corresponding data points in separate graphs.

  • Searching by diagnostic type is not yet available.

Future Enhancements

  • Data Export: Implementing functionality for data export will allow users to perform further analysis outside the platform.

  • Data Type: To enhance the value of the feature, we could display other data that we already have in our database, such as setpoint values and alarm events.

  • Graph Improvements:

  • Legends click to attach to the graph

  • Easier way to find corresponding data points in separate graphs.

  • Searching by diagnostic type.
