This service provides a key role in identifying issues with the health of the System Managers across the estate. The main purpose is to identify both Primary and Secondary units that have lost connection to the network (these will typically generate a critical alarm that will be visible in the alarm dashboard) whilst also providing ‘alerts’ to indicate inconsistencies in the units configuration that could at a later date lead to operational issues if left unresolved.
The Health Check works by communicating with the unit every 10-minutes to check its online status, and if at first it appears offline, will repeat the action on two further occasions (both at 10-minute intervals) before an ‘Offline alarm’ is triggered (so, 30 minutes after the initial request).
Active Alerts Dashboard
The default is the ‘Active Alerts’ dashboard that contains both offline alarms and any other active alerts. The dashboards has a KPI banner displaying the headlines, and each alert in the list is expandable to show further information.
Additional features
The dashboard also contains some features intended to improve the user experience. One such feature is the ‘Filter’, which allows the user to add filter rules to help narrow the resulting alert list. This is particularly useful if having to manage a large volume of alerts, as the filter can assist in troubleshooting e.g., the user may just want to view the alerts for a specific System Manager type or software version.
The dashboard also contains an ‘Alerts Glossary’ which describes the list of all possible alerts that exist in the Health Check service. Currently, these consist of over 20 unique alert types. The full list of alerts is available in the Technical Details section.
The alert list will automatically update when a new alert appears and doesn’t require the user to refresh the screen. The time of the most recent update can be seen in the bottom right-hand corner of the dashboard.
Alert Analysis dashboard
The Health Check service provides a second dashboard called ‘Alert Analysis’.
The main difference between this dashboard and the ‘Active Alerts’ dashboard, is it contains only active alerts, whereas the Alert Analysis dashboard shows all the historical alerts.
This dashboard provides the option for the user to specify a date range (unlike the Active Alerts dashboard) which will provide a list of all alerts that were closed within the selected date range.
The columns are all sortable, and of particular interest can be the final column which when sorted will show the duration the alert was active before being resolved. This can be useful for tracking the reaction time to alerts. Some alert types will have a higher priority than others, so having this level of insight can offer many beneficial use cases.
